About this deal

After some efforts at journalism, she started writing novels and her first book, You Had Me At Hello , was an instant success. For Roisin, the decision isn’t that hard, but Joe has to rush off so they agree to table it until he gets back. Lily won’t send Emerson to her father’s house overnight until she’s old enough to talk—“So she can tell me if something happens”—but she doesn’t want to fight for full custody lest it become an expensive legal drama or, worse, a physical fight. By that, I mean it’s easy for Roisin to spiral in this situation but the three of them keep her on a more sane path. I liked Roisin, however, I will say that at this stage, McFarlane's heroines are beginning to feel a bit samey.

Diary entries fancifully addressed to TV host Ellen DeGeneres serve as flashbacks to Lily’s teenage years, when she met her first love, Atlas Corrigan, a homeless boy she found squatting in a neighbor’s house. The thing I've come to find about McFarlane's novels is that they are all character driven, and this trait shines through again with Roisin and the gang.

References to abortion and abuse are handled with a respectful touch and feel like an organic part of the plot. Roisin supported Joe for many years whilst he struggled to make a name in writing but his previous show, the one before this one they are gathering to watch, was a breakout hit and now Joe is a big name with a lot of accolades and a lot of people wanting to work with him. That didn't stop me from rooting for them, and I was SO happy those people ended up together, even though there was a bit of drama along the way.

There are also a few undercurrents of…other feelings…that have been running between group members for potentially a long time, one of which Roisin is aware of and one of which she definitely is not. This isn't my favourite Mhairi McFarlane and at the start I didn't actually know if this was going to be for me, but I persevered and I'm very glad I did because I ended up enjoying this quite a lot. Roisin lives in fear of all of them growing apart, especially since all of their lives have gone in such different paths. com}: When Joe and Roisin join their group of friends for a weekend at a country house, it’s a triple celebration – a birthday, an engagement and the launch of Joe’s shiny new crime drama on TV.And the time she has spent with him over the weekend has seemingly only solidified all the things that don’t work between them now – his constant sniping and jealousy of Matt, etc. On the last page, Roisin, in the middle of teaching her English class, looks down and sees an envelope with her name on it peeking out of her bag. Roisin is shocked to see things that she had told Joe in confidence playing out on screen, and as time goes on she finds herself wondering if other parts of the show are also inspired by real life, such as the lead character's infidelity?
