The delicate smokiness lasts into the finish and the spices become more pronounced, rounding off a fantastic malt. It matured for 12 years in a pair of casks, a first-fill olorsoo sherry hogshead and a refill hogshead. I had fond memories of the Craigellachie 13 richness and broad array of flavors, and was looking forward to what another five years would add in terms of complexity and character. He is entrenched in the whisky community and all its trimmings and had to be cajoled into offering some additional output for us here instead of keeping it all for himself and his own blog. On the nose: truth be told, based on the color, I initially assumed a bourbon cask, but on the first few whiffs, I'm getting raisins, sun rype bar/fruit roll up, bit of chocolate fudge which tells me that there's a fairly vibrant sherry cask at work here.It acts as a marker;an indication that once its cloak has been lifted a spirit will emerge either as meaty (Cragganmore, Mortlach, Benrinnes) or fragrant (Glenkinchie, Speyburn, Balblair, AnCnoc, and Craigellachie) In other words, sulphur can be desirable. As often happens on first opening, it was OK, and I opened a bottle of 30 quid Hinch irish that seemed better, but the next day I went back and was blown away.

On top of that, the Speyside region was reaping the fruits of welcoming in the railroad system, meaning that, all of a sudden, transport of goods both in and out became much, much, easier.I am not a fan of the Craigellachie character overall, as it sometimes leans too much into sulfur, but here it matters not.
