About this deal

Hepworth brings alive the romanticism of Abbey Road without becoming saccharine, and follows the trends and developments of its 90 year history. Improvements to technology expanded what was possible, and it was the lowly “pop” people working in Studio Two who were most willing to innovate (there was also a Studio Three, which was originally intended for singers and small ensembles).

This isn’t a book that you would sit down to read cover to cover (unless you’re caught in lockdown during a pandemic), but it is a great reference book that I think every true Beatles fan should have on their shelf! It's very recognisable, but doesn't lend itself so well to fact-based subjects, and as a result this doesn't come across as a definitive history of the famous studios. As we get closer to the present day, there's more opinion, with a definite undercurrent of nostalgia, which perhaps is understandable, and anyway never veers too close to grumpy old man territory. On the management side of the industry, the book has much to say about George Martin, the producer, instrumentalist, and mentor to the Fab Four. Hepworth's book is an excellent choice for music enthusiasts who want to delve into the fascinating history and magic that was produced within the walls of the world-renowned recording studio that is a part of British culture.Sure, others had sung the song before, but they were white people in blackface, leaning into the bullshit “ain’t-Black-folk-simple? Her anecdotes are humorous, heartfelt, and supremely captivating, recounted with the passion of a true survivor and the acerbic wit of a weathered, street-wise New Yorker. Later that same year, when Lennon said he liked the first part of one take of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and the second part of another take, it was left to Martin and engineers Geoff Emerick and Ken Townsend to figure out that though the takes were in different tempos and different keys, if one were slightly sped up and the other slightly sped down, they would in fact match. Complemented by an array of revealing personal photographs, the narrative alternates between heartfelt nostalgia about the seedier side of Manhattan’s go-go scene and funny quips about her unconventional stage performances.

Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages. My only minor complaint was that was very little context provided as to what other studios where doing, particularly in the 30s and 40s. The 18th Annual Francis Davis Jazz Poll: The State of Our Union Could Be Better Major record labels were once notorious for trying to e. I welcomed these sidebars and found it only appropriate to "hear" the inside story of Abbey Road in Hepworth's very British voice.Every so often, once a month, I believe, the wall outside of the Studios is white washed, and within a few weeks it is covered in names again.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. However, as microphones better captured nuanced vocals, crooners and pop music became more prominent, and an army of fussy technicians (EMI was a “belt-and-braces organization”) stood ready to assist. Engineer turned studio manager Ken Townsend rechristened the place “Abbey Road” in the mid-’70s as a way to highlight the building’s relationship with its most famous client and their swansong album of the same name. He was involved in the launch and editing of magazines such as Smash Hits, Q, Mojo and The Word, among many others.

It’s just that I’m mixing in Beatles books with other books as you may have noticed from my last several posts.

The amazing piece of luck of The Beatles being picked up by George Martin after a modest audition is of course the stuff of legends, and this would of course cement not only the studio's place in history, but we see a seismic shift in the relationship between artists and producers, and introduce experimentation and depth into pop music the like of which had never been seen before. During EMI Studios' early years, the facility developed a reputation for classical recordings from the likes of Yehudi Menuhin and Pablo Casals. Hepworth’s writing is often elegant and more zingy than his cheery nature would lead you think, and the chapters and book as a whole keep a steady focus throughout. What lies behind the modest front door of the white building at No 3 Abbey Road in London's residential St John's Wood has been a source of wonder and excitement since the day it was first transformed and opened by Sir Edward Elgar in 1931.
