These scores are par for the course for a phone running the 765G chipset. The Pixel 5, which uses the same chip, scored 600 single and 1623 multi in the same test. Seemingly a solid all-rounder, does the Nokia 8.3 5G do enough to stand out in the increasingly crowded mid-price phone party? Read on to find out. Ease of Use Also, there are many controls and effects that could be applied better. For example, HDR is automatic with no manual override. Customisation of modes like time-lapse is limited. At the time of writing, Nokia is dangling another carrot, throwing in a pair of its Power Earbuds within the price of the phone. Overall, there are better smartphones out there at the same price point than the Nokia 8.3 5G for low light shooting. For example, intelligent image processing in the Google Pixel 4a renders better low light shots from what on paper is a simpler camera.
Again, it's no surprise that the polycarbonate 8.3 5G is not weather-sealed. In general, you'll need to fork out a lot more money to get a metal, waterproof phone. The Nokia 8.3 5G is HMD Global’s first attempt at a cheap phone with 5G. It targets the same busy space as the Pixel 5 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro. This comes with two key benefits. First, the phone’s software is untouched, meaning its completely free of bloatware, duplicate apps and UI changes. Second, because it ensures the phone will receive updates to newer versions of Android year-on-year, a key factor most companies struggle to deliver on at this price. The Nokia 8.3 5G features a 6.81-inch Full HD+ screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9. That means the screen is taller than those on most handsets, which means you get a larger screen without the phone feeling too large in the hand. The 2-day battery testing was conducted using a real life usage test by HMD Global. The test included active usage of a device for 5 hours per day with a new battery. Usage included e.g. gaming, video streaming, calling, sending sms, browsing and using apps (such as social media, news, navigation and music). The test was conducted with normal device settings in a lit indoor environment. The device was left on standby overnight.

The 8.3 5G can shoot 4K HDR video at 30fps, and there’s also a special “Action Cam” mode with super-steady stabilisation at 60fps at lower resolutions. I didn’t have an older Nokia phone on hand to directly compare but wind noise reduction is supposed to be more effective this year and you can also apply anamorphic video effects such as lens flare – JJ Abrams will be pleased. Nokia 8.3 5G review: VerdictThe only downside to the phone’s heft is that, like the Moto G9 Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, it can feel a little unwieldy to use one handed, especially if you’re a southpaw. This is in part due to its sheer size, but also because of its physical button placement. The difference between identical RAW and JPEG images at various ISO settings viewed side by side is interesting. Noise reduction at higher ISO settings is erratic for JPEG images taken in low contrast light. If you're serious about a picture, it is well worth opting for RAW format (the phone will record JPEG simultaneously anyway). While in this menu you'll also notice that HDR (High Dynamic Range) is set to 'always on'. It can be changed to auto, though there is no option to turn HDR off. However, the effect is not applied to RAW format images. We much prefer the manual control offered by a Google Pixel 4a through its Live HDR+ sliders. This setup doesn't quite match the penta-lens array on the Nokia 9 PureView, but all the cameras will let you take shots that look good enough for sharing on social media. We found the main camera to take sharp and colorful images, but it never truly blew us away. Max brightness levels aren’t as good as you’ll find on some of the best Android phones, but they’re high enough to make sure the phone screen remains legible in everything but the brightest sunlight.
