About this deal

Ellen Saint is meeting with a client when she sees a young man on the roof of a sleek apartment building called The Heights. She thinks she might recognize him. No..she knows she recognizes him. She would remember that face, the face of her nightmares anywhere. But she shouldn’t be seeing this man, across from her on the rooftop of the building over. She shouldn’t be seeing him at all. Because he’s been dead for several years. Ellen knows this for a fact because she’s the one who killed him. So how is it that Kieran Watts, the bane of her existence is still alive? These characters are not likeable, or at least I didn’t think they were, but Ellen is so unhinged she nearly overwhelms any chance the reader might have at objectivity. She becomes the villain- but is she the only one? EXCERPT: Craning to glimpse the man who has come out onto the terrace and stands at the clear glass balustrade, my first thought, as it always is when I witness someone poised inches from a sheer drop like that, is, 'He's going to throw himself off.' He's going to lean forward, look down, and hear the call of the void, exactly as I would. Then he'll jump.

The characterisation is very good, there’s a good range, from one who is gullible, one who seems guileless, one to fear, one or two to clench your fists in irritation and one master duper. The author certainly keeps you on your toes with this bunch! It twists and it turns and it twists again. The Heights by Louise Candlish is the very definition of a just one more chapter novel. I devoured it. And it's full of such great writing about the ferocity of maternal love' Ellen suffers from "high place phenomenon," a common form of vertigo that causes people to experience an irrational urge to jump from high places such as bridges, rooftops or balconies. It does not mean that the individual is suicidal, but is, rather an intrusive thought and form of mild anxiety, as well as autonomy. As the story opens, Ellen is meeting with a client when she looks out a window and recognizes Kieran Watts standing on the roof of an adjacent tall building called The Heights. She is convinced she is looking at Kieran and equally convinced that the man cannot be Kieran. She knows Kieran is dead because she killed him. He was a monster who ruined her life.Impossible to resist, impossible to predict, impossible to put down . . . this is an author at the top of her game' Erin Kelly Thank you to Atria and Simon & Schuster Canada for an arc provided via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is what Ellen experiences. How could Kieran still be alive? She is angry. Ellen is very, very, angry. Kieran has changed everything in her family's life. She first met him when he was a sullen teen her son brought home. That was the beginning of the end. Tragedy strikes and there is a price to be paid. Kieran pays it, but that is not enough! However, the main characters were just so unlikeable, and I felt little connection with them. Ellen particularly put me off. I expected to empathise with her as she was angry and grieving, but she was just so filled with hate, bitterness and prejudice. I didn’t like her at all, her pov brought me down, it wasn't a nice experience to be in her head, to be in her world. I also didn't feel like I got to know other characters well enough.

Bestselling author Lucy Foley is a huge fan of Louise Candlish’s writing and so am I! The Only Suspect is a tantalising domestic mystery that had me on edge from the very beginning of this story to the end. A tale of jeopardy, passion, fixation, lies, deceit and envy, The Only Suspect is a duplicitous piece of modern psychological fiction. Told in dual timelines, the writing and pace is perfectly balanced with the ongoing suspense and character development. This book is told using multiple POV's. This adds some meat and detail to the story. This was another solid read by Candlish but not my favorite by her. I am not a slow burn fan, and I wanted this book to hurry up at times. But there is a nice payoff at the end with the reveal. That was a nice touch and one I didn't see coming. Very nice touch, Candlish, very nice. This was a book that I had trouble putting down, it w=is not one that you want to start late at night as you will want to stay up top keep reading it. I made that mistake, but I finished it off the next morning. This multi-layered thriller has everythign you want in a great read: tension - you're never sure who is telling the truth - emotion - as you put yourself in Ellen's shoes - and an unravelling of the plot that is both satisfying and scary. Wonderful' Belfast TelegraphDISCLOSURE: Thank you to Simon & Schuster Australia via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Heights by Louise Candlish. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. Quite breathtakingly brilliant, this slow-burning thriller about the power of a mother’s love will keep you hooked' Real People This is a mesmerizing story, hard to put down, and doesn’t really fit into any specific mold- which is a good thing. The story does take its time to develop, but is well-crafted, executed, and thought-provoking.

Believability element: Did it blur the lines between fiction and reality with a believability element that made me think it could happen?

So disappointed in this. Was really looking forward to it. Have enjoyed many of her books (Other Passenger was fab and a fave) but this was dire. Boring and questionable storyline and it dragged on and on. I’m a huge fan of this thriller writer’s clever, serpentine stories. When the waste ground behind his house is approved for development, it spells trouble for Alex, who is hiding a big secret – but what? Just when I thought I’d figured it out, along came another twist! -- Good Housekeeping From this intriguing entree, we proceed to Ellen’s memoir, which also begins in bone juddering fashion. Ellen is a lighting designer, specialising in sorting out shadowy corners in the homes of well heeled clients. She’s a little shadowy herself, as we are about to discover as this saga unfolds. Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. Impossible to resist, impossible to predict, impossible to put down... this is an author at the top of her game'

The story relies heavily on that increasing doubt with every turn of the story, and the uncertainty enhances the suspense and tension as Ellen and Kieran battle wits. Not knowing how reliable Ellen's narrative is increases doubt about who is telling the truth or can be a trusted character. I was questioning what was real or what was Ellen's anxiety and if Ellen's obsession with revenge clouded her judgment.Eleanor came there to see what Will was up to, but she’s starting to wonder whether she should just forget about all of that and explore the island. There’s a lot to see and do, and when her ex finds out that she’s made the journey, things are certainly going to get interesting– and maybe a little heated too. This story of revenge, love and fear - and what justice really means - is a sure-fire hit' Fabulous This dual-timeline, domestic-noir tale is a tense, read-in-one-sitting thriller -- The Sun on Sunday Fabulous Magazine
