About this deal

Essentially, pink noise is the same as white noise but with the higher frequencies turned down in intensity. As a result, pink noise sounds lower pitched than white noise. The verdict: White noise machines We absolutely loved the Morphée – it’s so simple but has fast become an essential for us. And not just at bedtime – we found we used it to calm down during periods of stress too. Just brilliant. Ewan the Dream Sheep is perhaps one of the most well-known white noise machines for babies, with its cute and cuddly sheep design. Its features are fairly basic, with just four different sounds to choose from (including white noise and lullaby music), which are each accompanied by the sound of a resting heartbeat. I might be wrong, but I imagine most people would prefer to have more than five or six sounds to choose from, especially considering there are many white noise machines that have 20, 30 or even more. Only one white noise and fan option

We’ve been given an Ollie the Owl by a friend who swears by it. It plays for a while and then goes off but reactivates if the baby wakes.” (Rated by Mumsnet user User3627290) Our verdict Soft toys aren’t recommended in a cot until a baby is at least 12 months old, so Ollie will need to be kept out of reach of your sleeping baby until they reach their first birthday, but it can still be played with during the day. This is understandably more expensive than the other white noise machines on our list because it's a 2-in-1 machine. It's also larger but it can charge your phone while you sleep which we think is a game-changer. We're yet to test this in person, so we'll update this guide once we've been using it for a couple of weeks. What to consider when choosing a white noise machine On the other hand, while mains-powered white noise machines aren’t as easy to move around, they can be plugged in and left to play all night long without worrying about batteries. Your preference will depend on how you’re planning to use your white noise machine. Where should I place my white noise machine? I think the vacuum, fetal tone and shushing recordings could have been a bit gentler. But I imagine on a low volume, some kids will like them. As for the fan and white noise sounds, these are both good as they are at the deeper end of the spectrum. I personally find deeper white noise more relaxing than bright white noise.

1. Best overall white noise machine for babies: Dreamegg D11 White Noise Machine

Some white noise machines for babies, particularly those that are designed to be cuddled in the cot, stop the noise after a designated amount of time (anything from five minutes up to an hour or two). While this can work well to soothe some babies to sleep, others may wake up when the noise is turned off. Therefore, a white noise machine that can play continuously through the night may be more effective for some babies. It offers 11 different soothing sounds in total: six of which are for babies and include lullabies, and five that adults can enjoy too (if you enjoy being lulled off to sleep with white noise). There’s a wide range of volume levels (32 in total) and it’s surprisingly clear and powerful for its size. Don’t forget, however, that white noise machines shouldn’t be left on too loud or close to baby’s ears. Our favourite features? Just like Ollie the Owl, the Slumber Bear contains a cry sensor that will restart the noise when the baby begins to stir. The noise only plays for five minutes each time, but it will reactivate as many times as needed.

The internal battery, which is recharged using the USB to micro-USB cable provided, is one of the best features of the Dreamegg. You can leave it plugged in if you prefer, but the option to place it anywhere in a room and move it around easily is great.

The verdict: White noise machines

Our favourite features? It produces a great quality of sound, it’s very simple to use and, once you’ve plugged it in and turned it on, it will play all night long. Yes, please refer to Timer & Run Continuously section on the user manual. What is the decibel level for sound machines? To call the Hatch Restore 2 a white noise machine would be like calling a Bugatti Veyron a little run-around. While other machines that I tried offer help at nap or bedtime, the Hatch is a “companion” that has so many moving parts and considerations that it’s like having a little sleep therapist on your bedside table. The nature sounds all seem pretty good to me, without jarring looping which is always a good thing. I didn’t like the fair sound though, which I’ll mention more about in the criticisms below. Good speaker quality and volume The former hide a white noise speaker within a huggable form, while the latter are more likely to be propped on a surface outside the baby’s crib. There are benefits for both: cuddly toys can become a favourite of your child, but the smart speaker setup might have easier controls for adults and is much more likely to have main power. It’s also important to note that teddies and soft toys should not be placed inside a crib or attached to the side within a babies reach when they are under one year of age. This can put them at greater risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). How we test white noise machines
