And Margery and Clementine’s relationship is so unhealthy, I was so excited to have older dinner ladies, a couple no less investigate the crime but it just really really did not work for me. There were some very good lines in the descriptions usually that I did find amusing-- Margery bewailing her ancestors settling on a spot centuries ago where the lawn chairs would blow away in a storm, for example-- but other things fell flat for me. She is the author of The Dinner Lady Detectives, which is her first novel but definitely not her last! I was hoping that The Dinner Lady Detectives was going to join the group but it became evident very early on that this was not to be.

It is described as "a delightful, quintessentially British cosy mystery" and that's exactly what you get. Margery and Clementine are back with their usual crew of dinner ladies and they are never far from an investigation. No Spoilers, but I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns that jumped out, especially with the masked crew. Though they weren't sharp to pick or connect dots they did better than the police who ignored everything.

If you want to mix up your reading style but don't want anything too sinister just yet or too intense, then this is perfect. Clementine and Margery are dinner ladies who work at a secondary school, and murder and trouble seem to hunt them down. My final note is the use of "Clem" when talking to Clementine, I understand it is a shortened version, but given the definition of Clem, it wasn't pleasant to read a lot.

In this book we are back with Margery, Clementine and the gang at Summerview Secondary School - they're winding down and preparing for the October half-term break - spirits are high and gossip is running amok. I enjoyed the fact that the characters where multidimensional and there was an open discussion of mental health and the impact of being close to crimes, it was very thoughtfully done!

An Unfortunate Christmas Murder: A charming and festive

They are partners, and sleuthing partners end up being their second “day job” as they attempt to get to the bottom of, what they feel, is a mysterious death of their less than perfect coworker, Caroline. Instead, you are just following around these Dinner Lady Detectives as they try to figure out the murder using the resources a civilian has.

As they do, the feel they have a prime suspect in the form of the other teacher, but are they correct? I did like that there was finally an acknowledgement of the relationship but am not sure I wanted Margery to settle. I also very much appreciate how Hendy tackles with the ladies' mental and physical consequences from their previous cases. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the wonderfully varied world that is Mystery, Crime and Thrillers. Matching the other 3 books in style, but a new bold colour - these are going to look amazing on my shelf!
