About this deal

Corvaglia L., Martini S., Battistini B., Rucci P., Aceti A., Faldella G. (2014) Bolus vs. continuous feeding: effects on splanchnic and cerebral tissue oxygenation in healthy preterm infants. Pediatr Res. 2014 Jul;76(1):81-5 SMA Gold Prem ® 2 should only be used following recommendation by a healthcare professional. For enteral use only. Your healthcare professional will advise you when to move from SMA Gold Prem ® 2 to another formula. For preterm babies prescribed both SMA Gold Prem ® 2 powdered formula and Gaviscon Infant, we advise parents to make up the Gaviscon Infant separately and give it to baby part way through each prepared feed of SMA Gold Prem ® 2 powder. To avoid mixing issues, do not mix Gaviscon Infant directly with SMA Gold Prem ® 2 powdered feed. However, you can mix Gaviscon Infant directly with SMA Gold Prem ® 2 liquid. View the Preparation section to find out more. Commence feeding as close to birth as possible following individual clinical assessment. Maintain trophic feeds in high risk infants as long as clinically indicated. For oral and/or enteral nutritional support of patients at risk of malnutrition relating to chronic kidney disease.

Guidelines for making up special feeds for infants and children in hospital. (2007). Food Standards Agency. Once full milk feeds have been established and a substantial proportion remains DEBM, milk should be fortified with breast milk fortifier as per local guidelines. Expressed breast milk can be frozen and fortified once thoroughly defrosted. If frozen breast milk is used, gradually defrost in refrigerator (under 4 ºC). DO NOT use a microwave oven or allow to defrost at room temperature. Ensure thorough mixing prior to feeding.

Increased preterm nutritional requirements persist beyond the time when early milk composition changes to that of mature milk. This often coincides with a slowing of weight gain and a sequential reduction in serum urea, where a level <1.6mmol/l is indicative of a protein intake of <3g/kg (65).

Grey Drugs are locally-agreed medicines which are only recommended for restricted use within the Leeds Health Economy. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. If a decision to use an infant formula is taken, it is important to give instructions on correct preparation methods, emphasising that unboiled water, unsterilised bottles or incorrect dilution can all lead to illness.Breast milk should be fortified with one of the commercially available, multicomponent breast milk fortifiers that are designed to meet the needs of preterm infants.
