If you want a vegan toastie this is definitely my favourite cheese for it! It has an amazing smoky flavour and is so delicious! Violife original flavour grated This is the cheese that I was most sceptical about. Surely nothing can match up to the camembert I am used to consuming? Whether you’re trying out Veganuary or just fancy a change in diet, there’s definitely way more choice on the shelves than ever before.

But she was getting ahead of herself. And so the story began, a tale of two hungry mouths that were giving vegan cheese a try. Sure A had tried vegan cheese before, but would Violife’s vegan recipes live up to the hype? Only time, taste, and smell would tell. It would be a sensory journey for the ages, one vegetarian, one meat eater, exploring the many wonders of vegan cheeses, and how it fit into their lives. The couple smiled grandly, the sun teetering between cloud, and open warmth. I have to say, the Violife Le Rond Camembert flavoured vegan cheese had me very intrigued. I really had no idea what to expect from this as well all know that camembert is a very strong flavour. I wondered how well they’d be able to replicate the taste and texture of this famous and well loved cheese. Sainsbury’s have a few Free From vegan cheese options available and use similarly longwinded names for them as Tesco do. Their own-brand vegan cheeses include the following: Deliciously Free From Grated Cheddar-Style Coconut Base Alternative To Cheese (catchy, eh!), an alternative to soft cheese, a grated cheese and a Greek-style cheese.

The plant-based alternative was easier to cut into due to it being softer, and when I tried a slice of it on its own, it had quite a rubbery texture. It wasn't necessarily unpleasant, just different to normal cheddar. Using a mixture of oats, rapeseed oil, coconut oil and starch – among other things – Oatly have produced a cream cheese-like spreadable vegan cheese that is significantly lower in saturated fat than those that use more coconut oil.

Violife have three options for their grated cheeses: Cheddar Flavour, Original Flavour, and Mozzarella Flavour, which melts exceptionally well so works perfectly for homemade vegan pizzas. Their vegan cheese products include: Free From Coconut Oil Alternative To Grated Mozzarella, Free From Coconut Oil Alternative To Mature Cheddar… you get the idea… also Alternative To Jalapeno & Chilli Cheddar, Alternative To Italian Hard Cheese, Alternative To Halloumi, Alternative To Chilli Cheese Slices, and Free From Soft Cheese With Garlic & Herbs. Vegan alternatives to halloumi are few and far between (as we discuss in detail in our Vegan Halloumi article). But for those seeking vegan cheese that you can grill or even put on the barbecue, there are a few decent options, which we’ll outline below. The feel and look of it looked very similar to an ordinary dairy feta cheese cube, but it was once I took a bite that I could tell it wasn't cheese. Generally speaking, there are very few vegan cheeses that would be classed as less healthy than their non-vegan counterparts, but there are plenty – particularly those made with coconut oil – that have roughly similar levels of saturated fat as dairy cheese. On the other hand, those vegan cheeses made from nuts tend to have much lower levels of saturated fats (usually less than half) of non-vegan cheeses. Ultimately, if health is your primary concern, neither vegan nor non-vegan cheese should be top of your list of foods to indulge in.
