The story rhymes, which I find to be useful in a child's story, but the rhyme scheme can be a bit clunky if you pause while trying to open the flap for each reveal. Or are we actually dealing with a piece of classic Marxist literature with the Fox's obsessive relationship to his own socks serving as an allegory for capitalist commodity fetischism? It has a simple rhyming storyline and small flaps for readers to lift to help Mouse and Fox peer into each hiding place.

My only complaint is that the flaps are very difficult to open at first and we ended up slightly damaging a couple getting them to work. This was a pre-loved book and one that instantly intrigued 10 month old Bud, and I think will for a few years yet. There are a lot of everyday items dotted about, like an umbrella and a fireplace, which children can have fun naming, or even finding in their own home.I'm not going to give this a star rating, as I don't really know how to translate this into numerical form. She was the UK Children’s Laureate 2011–13 and has been honoured with a CBE for Services to Literature. I hadn’t seen this book before we got it, so it was nice to have a completely new one for me to read and discover at the same time as Cupar. Her collaborations with the fantastic illustrator Axel Scheffler have led to vivid rhyming stories which are a feast for the imagination.
