Molly pushes herself to excel in high school, winning a full scholarship to the University of Florida. However, when Molly's relationship with her alcoholic roommate is discovered, she is put into their psychiatric ward and denied a renewal of her scholarship. Possessing little money, she hitchhikes to New York to pursue an education in filmmaking.

Allow me to begin with this: I am young. Really. My earliest encounters with lesbianism were almost exclusively performative; Britney, Xtina and Madonna’s MTV onstage love fest, Katy Perry’s “ I Kissed a Girl”. I grew up, undoubtedly, with a starkly different view of the LGBT community than almost-73-year-old author Rita Mae Brown did. The book is directly referenced in Educating Rita with the central character confessing she has changed her name from Susan to Rita in tribute to both the author and the book.

This book was a good antidote. Hilariously written, human, sexual, occasionally profane: it's hard to be a homophobe when you're laughing that hard. The incest was what made me almost give up on this twice. The first time I was only a third into it, I think, and I had to read a bit more for the class this book was assigned. After that assignment, I kept reading, and came upon another instance of it, though this time it was figurative. First, Molly sleeps with her cousin. Now, I know people are going to defend this by saying she’s adopted. I have two cousins whose mother is adopted. They are as much my cousins as the ones who I am biologically related to. Adopted family is family no matter what. Molly has grown up with Leroy to the point where they could even be considered brother and sister in their relationship. When they first start exploring their sexuality they start making out in the woods along with another girl. Then after a conversation where both hint at being attracted to the same gender, they decide to have sex. They continue to have sex for a long time.Molly’s elementary school friend. Broccoli is at first reluctant to go along with Molly’s plan to show his uncircumcised penis to the other kids at school, but he soon grows to enjoy it.
