Forming what is essentially the novel's second part, the family relocate to the city and move into the Trueba's 'House on the Corner'. Whoever you are and whatever your situation in life when you read this book, I can promise you that it is one you will remember. Esteban is a man who lacks principles has conquered a lot of women and fathered several children through force but sets himself up as the perfect landlord who has rebuilt the local community and provided stability for its people. In The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, we are introduced to the Trueba family, whose lives are deeply intertwined with the political and social upheavals of their country. Esteban's son Jaime is killed by power-driven soldiers along with other supporters of the government.
The house of Spirits by Isabel Allende, is a sweeping and epic story which chronicles the lives, fortunes, torment and rise and fall of three generations of the Trueba-del Valle family, in Latin America.I managed to escape such a fate, fortunately, and report back, but it took me a little longer than I would have liked. Their love persists even after Pedro is run out of the hacienda by Esteban, because he is putting communist ideas in the other workers' heads. He is summoned to the Presidential Palace during the coup and is killed for refusing to announce that the president has drunkenly committed suicide.

And, particularly with a work as multi-layered as ‘The House of the Spirits’, dissecting it truly helped to grapple with the purpose and principles behind Allende’s writing.
The names Nívea, Clara, Blanca, and Alba are more or less synonyms, and this is mentioned as a family tradition. In 1993, the book was adapted into a film ( The House of the Spirits) by Danish director Bille August.
