About this deal

There’s also a family where the father is a paramedic who decides to isolate from his wife and children. Everything Stephanie Butland wrote about about that period was so relatable, even though the story was set in York - thank you. All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to exploring the reading suggestions at the back of the book.

It’s the state of mind and heart of the person reading it that will make the book grow into something greater than the words printed in it. In het boek lees je over de boekverkopers, maar leer je ook alle klanten met hun specifieke boekverzoeken kennen. I loved the quotes and the chapters where it feels that Stephanie Butland is talking to me personally about the power of books and reading. There’s a woman who’s just escaped from an abusive husband…and there’s a moody teenager who takes what seems to be an irrational dislike to Kelly.Beautifully written and thought provoking, it has reminded me of books I had forgotten about but will certainly read again plus some that I am unfamiliar with but will look out for. The poignancy of characters and story was phenomenal and it will forever be one of my favourite books. Everyone had differing experiences in the Covid pandemic, and their needs differed depending on their jobs/ home life/ security/ wants and desires. I know I couldn’t have listened to it if it had been published earlier, so the timing has been perfect for me.

Overall the feeling of being back in lockdown and if you suffered from separation from your family or a devastating loss then really this isn’t the book for you. Stephanie lives near the sea in the north-east of England, with her husband Alan and Harris the greyhound. This sparks an idea in Loveday and it makes her realise that there is something positive they can do to help people through the crisis and help the business into the bargain. I was surprised at the number of books I’d already read, but even more delighted with the number of books I haven’t even heard of. It's filled with the recommendations that they provide - books for loneliness, books to scare you, books for being normal or books to travel somewhere new. There is love, family, loneliness, grief, loss, illness, joy, all facets of the human experience told with such heart. It also brought into sharp clarity the ease with which it is possible to put someone in danger, quite unintentionally, because of naivety on our part.

It was heartbreaking to hear their stories, especially as I was pretty sure they would be based on true accounts. Wasn’t sure how I’d go delving into the pandemic… yet it was a joy to read, as are all of Stephanie Butland’s magical books. Most of the threads are tied up nicely by the end, albeit with some difficult, sometimes tragic events along the way. There are quite a few issues covered, and it’s quite clever the way that they’re introduced via the ‘book pharmacy’. Het voelde enorm warm aan om te lezen over de boekenwinkel, en de vreugde die een boek teweeg kan brengen bij mensen. However, it was a joy to read and I love the idea of a book pharmacy and even reading this book will give you lots more to add your “to read lists”. She knows he would do great things, but would also expect her to look after her readers, and so she suggests opening a book pharmacy! While I've read thousands and have a sizeable home library, few books have ever begged me to read them again. I come from Whitby and know York very well and there were countless mistakes regarding both places which really annoyed me and prevented me believing that’s where they were supposed to be.
