About this deal

A grueling track made out of necessity for this brave little fox to survive after its home was destroyed by climat change. Beautiful and moving, Leila and the Blue Fox delicately explores themes of migration, freedom and belonging, through a captivating tale that glistens with wonder.

I loved Julia and the Shark, their first collaboration and was, very excited to learn of Leila and the Blue Fox.The dynamic is frayed and ever-shifting; Leila hasn't seen her mother in six years and is desperate for answers. The authors writing allows the imagination to see the story, with the settings being described beautifully and the characters written so well they become likeable and real. Leila joins along with her mother Amani on an arctic expedition following the extraordinary migration of a polar fox across well over 2000 miles.

It then moved on across the ice to Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada (2,179 miles, 3,506 km) in 76 days – at which point tthe GPS tracker broke down! Julia and the Shark, in collaboration with her husband, artist Tom de Freston, was Indie Book of the Month, Scottish Booktrust Book of the Month, and has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of the Year 2021. Again, we have stunning (equally layered) illustrations with the single accent-colour, to bring the story and atmosphere to life.

Producing another middle grade in the same format with a feel of such a special and collectible series is a celebration of how much creating quality literature for this age range must mean to them both. It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. Alongside the stories of these journeys, the ever-changing issues of climate change, migration, immigration and mental health are also explored. Mainly, set on a boat in the Arctic Circle, this book is perfect for ages 8-11 who like heartwarming adventure stories.
